The Origins of Buddy Christ

The Origins of Buddy Christ

Buddy Christ! One of the most popular Christian memes to ever grace the internet. It doesn’t matter which social media website you use, sooner or later you’ll stumble across a smiling picture of Jesus giving you two thumbs up. He’s approachable, he’s charismatic, he’s slightly cartoonish — and he got his start in the  controversial 1999 Christian satire film Dogma, directed by indie darling Kevin Smith.

In the movie, a Catholic bishop played by the often blasphemous (but always funny) George Carlin decides it’s time to modernize the Church. The bishop launches the Catholicism Wow initiative, which aims to revamp Jesus Christ so that he’s more palatable to a jaded and heavily materialistic audience. Decades later this satirical take on the commercialization and commodification of Christianity still has a lot of bite.

Of course the word of god transcends fashion. The idea of having Jesus revamped by marketing agencies is odious, yet it’s the kind of thing that some people keep trying to do. It’s a bit reminiscent of the Poochie Simpson’s episode, where studio executives decide to “refresh” the Itchy and Scratchie show by introducing a newer, cooler, hipper character.

Buddy Christ quickly escaped the confines of the satirical film that spawned it, and has since become a huge internet meme. Not all Buddy Christ memes are safe to print (and some are downright nasty), but there’s a lot to love in some of the more kind hearted, Christ-centric ones.
